What are the difference b/w a Lube oil and a Fuel oil (LO & FO) purifier?

Main difference is that LO purifier is used for separation of water mainly and FO purifer used for separation of sludge mainly. Thus, FO purifer is run as clarifier in most of the ship and LO system runs on purifer.
clarifier has laval ring/chamber where as purifer has dam ring. So, major diff lies in setting of backpressure and throughput. dere is a change in gravity disc.

Based on Alpha level purifier.-In HFO purifier v can see 3 pipe connections on the top, which is dirty oil, clean oil and water.usually purifier runs as clarifier and if it detects presence of water ,it ll open drain valve in the water outlet and reduces the water content in the purified oil.hence it is ALCAP(alpha level clarifier and purifier)....................In LO purifier u can see only 2 pipe connections on the top.which is dirty oil and purified oil.No water coonection here the (water+ sludge) in the LO discharge through the sludge port..

Every purifier has its own limitations, in manuals it will be specifically given, which oil to use, depending upon the capacity, you can use lube oil purifier for diesel oil , but not for heavy oil, as the optimum temperature maintained for ho is around 98, in the case of lo purifier, if hfo is used and the optimum temperature is maintained it will spoil the o rings
